I am always relieved beyond words when I speak to Oday and he tells me that he has spoken to his family. I never ask if they are ok as it feels so painfully trite. I simply ask if he has spoken to them and at worst if they are safe. Of course they are not safe. I also never ask Oday for images or words; I just use his words when we message or when he posts stories. He is busy trying to keep his family alive and I don’t believe that we should expect the Palestinians to perform like circus monkeys so that we can help. We should be helping because we are human.
Oday is my friend, and his family needs our help as they are currently in the most desperate fight for survival. At 22 years of age, my friend Oday shoulders the heavy responsibility of being the sole financial supporter of his beloved family in Gaza.
