When she spoke up

When she spoke up,

they were annoyed

and told her to be silent.

When she shut her mouth,

they yelled at her,

and said she was defiant.

She went to leap,

yet they said to keep,

her feet firmly in the dirt.

She liked to dream,

they scoffed at her

and said she was a jerk.

Eventually when she

had almost lost,

who she was meant to be,

she stopped listening

to the voices, and said

they are not a part of me.

When the world was quiet

she was able to hear

the beating of her heart,

the inner song that

told her, she was brave

from the very start.
