About the event

The Sunbird is a book of two parts. The first tells the fictional story of Nabila Yasmeen, a Nakba survivor. The story is told in time shift, jumping between Nabila’s present as an 81-year-old woman in 2023, and her past as a young girl in rural Palestine in 1947/1948. The second, non-fiction, part of the book is a succinct summary of the tragic history of Palestine and provides context for the reader to fully appreciate Nabila’s sense of displacement and loss.

“I wrote The Sunbird for people who want to understand what is happening in Palestine. It is deliberately brief to counter the narrative that the Palestinian issue is complex. The Sunbird is a distillation of aspects of the Palestinian experience derived from Palestinian oral and written histories about Al Nakba, combined with some of my own family’s experience as Arab migrants to Australia. I hope to see you on 20 June.”  Sara Haddad
