The Sunbird is a novella about Palestine. It is a whisper rather than a scream.
Originally self-published to much acclaim, The Sunbird (2024) is an indie novella that quickly captured the hearts and minds of thousands seeking to understand the Palestinian experience. This was then republished through UQP but Sara Haddad made the decision to leave UQP in mid 2026 and return to self-publishing after UQP decided to pulp Wiradjuri writer Jazz Money’s book Bila, illustrated by Matt Chun.
Sara says of The Sunbird “it is necessarily brief, to counter the narrative that the question of Palestine is complicated, to be read in a single sitting, to be accessible to readers of all ages and all reading levels.” The story itself is only 74 pages, with a comprehensive postscript to further help readers understand the sequences of events that Nabila experiences right through to 2024.
On a personal note it was reading The Sunbird and meeting Sara that really changed the trajectory of my life. I was woefully ignorant about the devastating history of Palestine. Becoming educated has been a revelation and has also forced me to unlearn most of what I thought about the world and the fact that I am a settler on stolen land and that I can’t fight for the people of Palestine without fighting the First Nations people of the country where I am lucky enough to reside.
Everything I have learnt is the impetus behind my revolting little book corner. It is my effort to do better and challenge what has been, what is and hopefully be a positive part of what will be.
I highly recommend The Sunbird - such a great place to start if you simply want to do better which is something we should all be aspiring to.
